site-specific interactive installation
The unspoken history of the former listening station at Teufelsberg in Berlin, embedded within a double-layered wall, is revealed through the audience’s breath. One by one, visitors are invited to sit in front of a niche—an area historians officially describe as “undefined.”
With each breath, the light in the niche comes alive, altering the opacity of the double-sided mirror enclosure and exposing what lies beneath: the back of a veteran officer. At the same time, the breath is distorted and amplified by transducers on the mirror. The feedback sound accumulates, gradually spiraling into an uncontrollable event that erases the vision. A rotating mirror inside the niche interrupts the image again, so that the experience and duration of the vision are always unique, shaped by the breathing pattern of each person.
The work becomes an investigation into the hidden strata of history, and into how we might give voice to the past that is still echoing in space.
